The biggest UX failure mode for AI agents isn't wrong outputs β it's interfaces that leave users unable to understand what the agent did, why, or how to intervene. Trust breaks down not from errors but from opacity.
Eight agentic UI patterns
Streaming Output
Stream responses token-by-token rather than waiting for completion. Reduces perceived latency by 60β80% and lets users interrupt if the output takes a wrong direction before it's finished.
Confidence Indicators
Show uncertainty where it exists β hedging language, confidence scores for classifications, source counts for RAG responses. Users calibrate trust appropriately instead of treating all outputs as equally reliable.
Action Transparency
Show what the agent is doing in real time β "Searching customer databaseβ¦", "Reading 3 documentsβ¦", "Calling CRM APIβ¦". Users understand agent behavior rather than watching a black box.
Confirmation Gates
Require explicit confirmation before irreversible or high-impact actions (send email, delete record, make payment). One of the highest-trust-building patterns in agentic UX.
Undo Patterns
Where possible, soft-delete actions with a time-windowed undo. Where not possible, make the irreversibility explicit before action β not after. Users need to know what can be recovered.
Audit Trails
Log every agent action with timestamp, input, output, and tool calls. Users should be able to see exactly what the agent did and why β essential for regulated industries and trust recovery after errors.
Progressive Control
Start with sensible defaults and progressively expose controls to advanced users. Novice users need a working agent out of the box; power users need configurability.
Feedback Loops
Make it easy to provide explicit feedback (thumbs up/down, corrections) that improves agent behavior. Close the loop between user signal and agent improvement visibly.
The core principle: legible agency
Users must always know what the agent did, what it will do next, and how to stop it.
Every interaction should reinforce user understanding and control. When users feel in control of an agent, they use it more. When they feel uncertain, they abandon it β even if outputs are correct. Design for understanding, not just for capability.
